Earning your Master’s degree online has jumped in popularity quite rapidly. The Internet is now readily available in most homes and at most jobs, people find that they can earn their degrees at their own pace and without leaving their current jobs. As the popularity continues to increase, more and more universities are starting to offer programs online. However, there has also been an increase in the number of “diploma mills” offering fake degrees online.
As with any other business, universities have to sustain a profit in order to keep up with their competition. Instead of requiring you to complete coursework, they may offer you credit for life experience. Essentially, everyone who can afford the price is given a diploma, and for a few dollars more you could even graduate with honors. Practical experience is not an issue at all.
The problem for the students who are looking for a Master’s degree online and end up getting duped and paying for fake degrees online is that life experience is not always acceptable by state and federal laws. When they go out to look for a job, they may not be accepted or they may not be held with as high of a regard as students that attended a traditional university.
When you start looking for a school to earn your Master’s degree online from, there is a quick way to start to weed out the fake degrees online. Look at the actual web address. These are usually offered by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which is the organization that gives out domain names. Schools that are accredited will have .edu as part of their web address. Schools offering fake degrees online may not. You can also check the U.S. Department of Education’s list of accredited schools to see if the particular school is listed.
